Monitoring wader populations is a key element to their conservation.

Birds can be monitored on their breeding grounds, their wintering grounds and indeed on their stop-over points during migration. Monitoring on a regular basis gives us a firm idea of population trends and fluctuations. It also highlights some crucial areas that may be in urgent need of protection that have been hitherto unrecognised.
